Glossary
Featured snippet
A featured snippet is a short block of content that a search engine displays at the very top of its results to answer a question directly. The engine selects a passage, list, or table from a web page it considers a strong match and shows it above the regular blue links, along with the page title and link. The goal is to give the searcher an immediate answer without requiring a click, though the source page still receives prominent placement.
Why it matters
Appearing in a featured snippet puts your content in the most visible spot on the results page, often above the top ranked link. For questions where people want a quick answer, that position can win attention that would otherwise go elsewhere.
Snippets also shape how content is read by AI answer engines. Tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google pull short, well structured answers when they respond to questions. Content written to earn a snippet, clear, direct, and well formatted, tends to be the same content these systems find easy to quote.
There is a tradeoff. Because the snippet answers the question on the results page, some searchers never click through. Even so, the visibility and the credibility of being the chosen answer are valuable, and many searchers click for the fuller explanation.
How to apply it
Answer the question directly. Place a clear, self contained answer near the top of the relevant section, ideally in 40 to 60 words.
Match the format to the query. A how to question often earns a numbered list, a comparison may suit a table, and a definition suits a short paragraph. Structure your content the way the answer should appear.
Use clear headings that mirror the questions people ask. A heading phrased as the question, followed by a concise answer, gives the engine an easy passage to lift.
Be accurate and specific. Vague or padded text rarely gets selected. A precise answer that a reader could act on immediately is far more likely to be chosen.
Cover the follow up. After the short answer, expand with detail so the page serves both the snippet and the reader who wants more.

Common questions
How do I get a featured snippet? There is no guaranteed method. Answer a clear question directly, format the answer to match the query type, and rank well for the term.
Can a featured snippet reduce traffic? Sometimes, because the answer appears without a click. Many searchers still click through for the full context.
Are featured snippets the same as AI overviews? No. A featured snippet quotes one page. An AI overview generates a summary that may draw on several sources.
